Welcome to Finkel

Our tradition can be traced back to Ewald Weidhaas (1869 – 1939) in the 19th century. His son Paul took over his father’s business following his years of travelling. When the Second World War drew to a close, his daughter met Siegfried Finkel (1927 – 2010). His son Johannes Finkel took over the workshop in 1984 and his daughter Daniela (born 1987) is now the 5th generation to continue the craft.

THE BOW WORKSHOP

Finkel’s bow workshop is situated in the heart of Switzerland in Schwanden bei Brienz. The region is renowned for its mountains, forests and lakes. Finkel bows have been produced here for decades and are sold worldwide.

From the workshop

“Le violon, c’est l’archet – The violin, that is the bow”

The bow makers: Daniela Finkel, Menk Lüthi, Daniel Ernst, Markus Fischer

The secrets behind a good bow lie in the quality of the wood and the finishing. A bow maker has to recognise the special properties of the wood, feel it, understand it and appreciate it. The eye, manual expertise, feeling and experience are much more important in the workshop, however. The bow makers bear music on their hands, so to speak. It is through their craft that the bows are given the strength and elasticity that make for a good sound.

The craft of bow making is an age-old trade, something that we cherish and uphold in its traditions. “Le violon, c’est l’archet – The violin, that is the bow”, as the violinist Giovanni Battista Viotti once said.
